Seriousness and also keeping fun and interesting. Being serious to understand music is a science, and fun not to let it become tedious. Most music students don’t stick to practicing for the mere reason nobody has ever showed them the right way to practice, practice with the mind and not as a robot, and keeping it interesting and challenging. You need to challenge yourself, put yourself to the edge. Read More

I started out as a percussionist, studying throughout high school and in to college at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. During my time in Boston, I discovered a bustling bluegrass music scene and my focus switched to stringed instruments, namely the mandolin and the violin. Since College, I have been using all veins of traditional music to join in and build communities of artists. I'm very well connected in the New York City Bluegrass, Irish, and Jazz scenes. Read More

For all students, regardless of age or skill level, I like to gauge their musical interests (i.e., what music they listen to, what inspired them to pick up the guitar, etc.), and then work from there. For someone who has never picked up an instrument before, I generally work out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1. Once we're past that, I'll start showing them some basic songs, as well as seeing what kinds of songs they would be interested in learning. Read More

Having taught students of several different age groups, on several different instruments it is hard to have a definitive "set method". For all students, however, I try to do several things that will help them no matter the age or instrument. I help them develop their technique, music theory knowledge and work on ear training. No matter the age or instrument I believe these 3 things lead to musical success no matter what. Read More

My Teaching Style might be called the Charles Rosen Approach holistic use of numerous aspects: 1. Efficient instrumental mechanics (the basis of a strong and accurate technique); 2. Causal influences both historical and theoretical, which inevitably affect each other in a constant give-and-take and which we perceive through the sieve of time after the event. 3. Proper use of the body as demonstrated in Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, and Body-Mapping, which can be grouped together under the umbrella of Ergonomics! Read More

For beginners to the guitar, bass or banjo I usually start with the basic notes and chord shapes. When they progress and for more advanced students, I introduce reading tab, music, scales and basic chord progressions. For advanced students I generally work with modes, finer technique and advanced sightreading, chordal and modal melodies. To work in practice exercises I typically bury them in pieces the student enjoys to better get the hang of them. Read More

I have taught elementary, middle, and high school music and have enjoyed each experience. I was teaching chorus, class keyboard, music theory, music appreciation, and modern band ensemble. I always want for my students to feel successful which is why I not only encourage their practicing but provide specific details on what they need to practice so they feel the most successful and know exactly what they need to practice.
