For beginners I like to have a method books such as Alfreds or Hal Leonards and occasionally supplement with an easy piece to hold their interest. Its important for them to have something to show as soon as possible. As the student advances, the Mickey Baker books are good for the interested jazz student. And getting them to play simple chord progressions and melodies is a good way to get them off and running . Read More

Over my years of teaching I have developed various "games" and "fun" lessons to keep young ones interested while learning important skills. For older students and adults I adapt a teaching style based on what I refer to as the four pillars Pat Martino, Don Mock, Howard Roberts and Ted Greene into a lesson plan to suit the individual. I do not believe that a cookie cutter teaching method could possibly accomplish nearly as much. Read More

In every lesson, I will check in with the student to see how they are progressing and will address any issues that have arisen during their practice sessions. I try very hard to tune into the individual student's learning style and to figure out the best way to communicate my philosophy. I like to start with an example from whatever musical style from which the student wishes to learn and from there I will look to derive a greater understanding of how and why the music works the way that it does. The most important thing for any student of any skill level is to be excited about playing and practicing their instrument. For beginners, I start by introducing the instrument and how all the parts work together to make music. We then move on to the basics of chords and scales, along with exercises to help build dexterity in the fingers. For intermediate or more advanced students, lessons are catered more to what that particular student needs, whether they wish to work through particular songs, styles, or techniques. Read More

My teaching style is very personal. I feel the need to truly know my students in order to best help them progress. I like for my students to be open about concerns and weaknesses in their abilities. I try to help them to analyze their own technique rather than have me tell them directly as this will help them to progress outside on the lesson and therefore more quickly. The greatest feeling is when a student comes in already having an idea of where they want the lesson to go for that day. Read More

In 2009, I graduated from Capital University with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, and since graduation I've had many opportunities to play around the Columbus, OH area, performing rock, pop, and jazz music frequently. I love performing and listening to music, and as a teacher I want to share my appreciation with the rest of the community. Read More

I approach learning music as a no pressure situation. Everyone is going to learn at their own pace. I recommend setting a goal or a benchmark of what you would like to learn or where you would like to be. We will work together to set an effective practice routine that helps you achieve that goal while making you feel accomplished and engaged. After all, having fun is the name of the game! Read More
