For beginning students, I typically start with the basic essentials needed to get a feel for the instrument, and to read music. Then once they have that accomplished, we move straight on to learning their favorite songs as this is when the most progress can be gained. Once the student has grasped these fundamentals, We can move on to the more creative side of things by moving into Theory and Songwriting. Read More

I have taught private lessons for 15 years. I emphasize the practice makes perfect rule of thumb. I tell my students you're not studio/performance ready until you can play through a song 10 times without error. I encourage improvisation. I always say if you can count to 4 you can start learning in less than 10 minutes. I stress the importance of practicing every chance a student gets. I strongly advise recording yourself and being your own critic prior to begining a student's live performance career. Read More

My education background is in civil engineering, so tend to be a hands-on, problem solving teacher. If a student has a weakness, I tend to focus on correcting the problem point and focus before moving on. I believe in consistent practice which fits within the confines of one's schedule. I believe a basic understanding of musical theory is important, but I tend to keep these sorts of ideas as practical as possible based on a student's ambitions with the guitar. Read More

I began teaching guitar back in 1991, while attending Samford University. I have continued to teach over the years since then, both part-time and full-time. I performed with various bands (of my own and joining with others in) throughout high school and college. Read More

The instrument I'm teaching will determine the methods of teaching I use, for example, if I'm teaching saxophone I use Hal Leonards essential elements to teach the fundamentals and after that depending on what style of music or type of player the student wants to be will determine what I teach them. What i teach is different for every student. Every student is different, what a student is interested in such as a style of music or playing has a huge impact on what I teach them. Read More
