I try to use psychological judo to draw a student into why they need to learn what they think is unimportant. An example of this might be scales, which are boring to some. I'll show them how learning scales is critical to chord theory and construction, as well as improvisation. Most of my lesson plans are customized for each student, depending the style they are interested in, and the level that they are already playing. Generally speaking for beginners, I begin with teaching about the instrument (string names, frets, tuning, etc.). Then we move on to chords, starting with the easiest ones to play.
