I teach children as young as 6, and adults well into retirement. I first assess the student's musical goals, then tailor the teaching method to achieve those goals. Some students want to just have fun, some want to learn "hum and strum", while others want to prepare for competitions or perfomances or go on to become professional musicians. I graduated with a degree in fingerstyle guitar performance and so I know how to perform and teach numerous acoustic guitar styles but I can still plug in the electric guitar and have fun rocking out. Every student progresses at their own rate and it's important to give students attainable short-term goals in the service of long-term achievements. Because my first experience with learning guitar/guitar lessons (when I was  9 years old) was very boring (just learning from a guitar method) I work at trying to make music fun. Music is meant to be fun, so I make the guitar lessons fun!! I have a pretty relaxed approach to teaching the guitar! No stress!! I have my students provide me with a list of artist or bands that they enjoy listening to as well as songs from those artists that they are interested in learning. I review the list and select an appropriate song for them to learn based on the complexity of the song and their ability. Read More
