For my younger to play games with them that teaches them the fundamentals of music theory while also having fun during the lesson. For my older students I like to see what gets them excited during the lesson and move forward accordingly. That can be extremely different from Student to Student but I do like to stay involved with the process and positive throughout. First and foremost, lessons should be fun. I like to keep a positive attitude, along with patience and understanding, since learning an instrument can be a bit intimidating. I'm very encouraging, and might even give a good rock n' roll yell once the student is grasping a certain song or chord structure. With my youngest students I like to start note reading early to build a strong foundation. I often use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, or the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method Vol.1 2. Depending on the student's playing style, we may use other books or handouts as well. I also teach with guitar tab or tablature, which can be an easier way to start learning songs and riffs.
