I do this because I love music, and I love helping others love music. So, while I do want the students to be very proficient musicians, I am mostly concerned in helping cultivate the student's passion for music. After all, if the student doesn't love the music, it's not near as urgent to practice and produce results. The love of the music is what drives the practice. Also, while I have general curriculums designed to guide the student's educational journey, I know that all students learn at different paces. Read More

I use a number of resources to teach students concepts in musical performance. This includes online resources and method books that enhance fundamentals and technique. I do believe that understanding of music theory is necessary to advance beyond the intermediate level, and this system has assisted in training many students over the years. Novice students are encouraged through movement and activities to teach concepts while intermediate players are given exercises that focus on instrumental technique to strengthen musicality. Music is like a language all it's own, and I try to teach it similarly to how we naturally learn language. Growing up we don't learn by grammar and rules, but by listening to others. I make sure they are prepared with everything needed to play songs/pieces, as well as all that is needed for improvisation and solos. Then I begin starting them on reading and writing music, typically using a beginner method book such as essential elements. Read More

No two students are alike. Because of this fact, no two learning plans are equal. While the easy answer is, "We'll begin with the fundamentals," the more puzzling question and answer is, "How can I apply fundamentals in a meaningful way to the student to ensure that they stay engaged, interested, and focused?" Some students perform well while having the book thrown at them; others do not. My method for beginning students is to pierce the veil of HOW they learn before moving on to which fundamentals to apply, and how to apply them. Read More

I'm a passionate and motivated guitar teacher who loves sharing my knowledge of music. I graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a B.A. and Psychology and went in to the education field 7 years ago. I studied Jazz Ensemble with one of the top jazz musicians in Houston and have been playing guitar since I was 11. My curriculum is incremental, and well planned that can take a beginner play through the proper foundational knowledge to help them reach advanced levels and become skilled in improvisation, song writing and performing. Easy going, but serious with regard to practice/application. My teaching approach: I possess a thorough knowledge of the instrument. Focus on proper technique for all students, regardless of his/her playing ability. Once proper technique is established, I utilize the Berklee Series as a basis for instruction. These volumes are supplemented by exercises, which I write specifically for the particular student’s needs. As the student progresses, I incorporate tunes that the student wishes to learn into the lesson plan.My guitar lessons take place in: Either locationGuitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerpicking, Slide Guitar, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Guidance In Equipment Selection Read More

My methods vary from student to student. I realize that some people learn in different ways and I do my best to accommodate my students. I'm a very pattern oriented person so if you prefer diagrams and visuals, I can definitely help you learn. I also have many different tricks and techniques to make something so complex seem much more simple. If need be, I will make personal Word documents for my students that I can email to them so my students have material study and work on even outside of the lesson. Read More
