First, I find out what the student wants to focus on more, whether it is notation and musical theory, or learning a few basic chords, strumming patterns and such, to be able to play their favorite songs. No matter their ability, this method of teaching is effective because I find that it keeps the students interested and engaged. I will always explain "why" we are learning something, whether it's a particular technique or topic and "how" we go about accomplishing it.
