I am a mentor-style teacher. I love to see my students develop their love for music at their own pace, and I will do whatever it takes to help them achieve their goals. I feel that the music teacher/student relationship is something that can transcend music, and so I can be counted on for trustworthiness, reliability, punctuality, and honest encouragement. To help support this stage I typically introduce basic note reading skills to acquaint the students with musical notation while introducing them to playing in time. I teach from a flexible curriculum depending on the student's goals and interests. If someone wants to learn technique, music theory, songwriting, how to play Taylor Swift songs, arranging, composing, confidence, et cetera we will work on what is driving them to take lessons and learn! If the student is younger I will provide them with an organized syllabus and “fun” damentals! If they are older, I will help them find a way to stick with the music and accomplish their goals. I began teaching guitar part-time about 6 years ago as a side job, on top of my then-main gig as a grocery store clerk. Slowly but surely, however, I added more and more students to my roster and was able to phase out the grocery store job, and today I teach guitar full time! As I have said before, I always like to structure my lessons around my student. If they are not having fun, they will not learn, and then I won't be doing my job ! Lessons are structured around songs that they like and what makes those songs unique. I like to teach some fundamentals about guitar, then relate it back to the song. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with.
