I am passionate about providing a top quality private flute education. I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Music Education in 1994. I continued my flute studio and became a band director in 2000 and taught band in North and South Carolina until 2014. I worked on my masters degree in music eduation from the University of North Carolia at Pembroke and received 18 hours graduate credit. For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material. For beginners, I like to start with the Rubank method books, which progress pretty rapidly. I also focus on tone production and scales as we move along at the level of the individual student. I gauge the speed at which we move based on the student in question, and prepare a practice routine for each student based on how much time they have to practice each day. For an intermediate to advanced student, I work with more the more advanced Rubank method books, and suggest solo literature appropriate for them to prepare. Read More

Since most of the students I teach are members of a band program, I make sure that most of my lessons are based on what is being learned at school. Planning an individual practice schedule is imperative for their success but at the same time make it enjoyable so the student will want to practice. Constant acknowledgement of their progress each lesson the student more eager to learn.
