I began teaching during my college days instructing saxophone at ASM studios in Avalon instructing school level students. At the same time I began instructing privately teaching a few adult students. This where my teaching began! After graduating at the music department, the Dean of Music recommended me for the music tutoring position at Valencia College and I taught under that position for one full school year. At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson. For beginning students, I use the Trevor Wye beginning books and supplement with solos, etudes, songs and exercises that I give them which are appropriate for their level. For more advanced students, I will use etudes and methods/ solos which are appropriate for their level. For adults, I will find their interests and select a course of study with them.  With all students, I will assist with their school music or any ensemble/ solo music they wish. I try to have a very positive approach to teaching. I believe that if a student is told what they are doing wrong constantly, they will feel like they aren't good enough for the instrument, or they will lose interest. I have enjoyed a long and successful career in music and music education. I have performed at over 2000 events, taught students of all ages along the way, and also have taught flute and music theory at the college level. I am semi-retired now, and enjoy playing first flute in a symphonic wind ensemble, playing wedding ceremonies with a harpist, pianist, or acoustic guitarist, as well playing in a jazz quartet. I am a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Performing Arts where I studied Music Education. I also have a diploma in Piano Performance and Teaching from the Royal College of Music.
