I have been teaching privately since I was in college and have been teaching ever since. .  I believe in meeting students where they are and encouraging them to practice regularly so they will continue to progress at a rate that keeps them excited and developing a passion for the flute and music.  I use classical music and more modern music to help them explore different styles and to keep having fun!  My students are encouraged to audition for honors bands, enter solo and ensemble competitions Adult students are encouraged to join local flute choirs/ orchestras or local concert bands or community orchestras to broaden their experiences. Putting a label on any student, and/or compartmentalizing students is the last thing I would ever do. There are a couple of good method books, but introducing appropriate solo repertoire as early as possible creates a sense of self accomplishment, and so I normally follow my teaching instincts to know exactly the best time to bring this into the picture. For beginning students, I like to start from Essential elements, Suzuki 1, or Piano Adventures. Students will also likely have a theory workbook or worksheets that match the level of their current repertoire. Intermediate students, we will start using a program called smart music that plays the accompaniment for pieces that we are working on.
