Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
For beginning students who are children, I like to start with either the Rubank Elementary Method or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as I find these provide a strong foundation in proper technique and sound, and reading music. As we move through this method, I will introduce exercises to help the student further develop a good sound on their instrument. At the same time, we will also begin to play solo and duet repertoire. I am an instructor who loves working with students of all ages to help them find their love of and passion for music. In 1995, I graduated Boston University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance. Performing all over the United States and Canada with various theatre, orchestral, and chamber ensembles has given me the opportunity to do what I love and meet many people who share a joy of music. I also landed my first private lesson job at the Rhapsody Academy of Music as a piano teacher and I taught mostly beginners but some advanced students. I am now a full time public school general music teacher in Jersey City and the students I teach are in grades K-6. My most recent gig was when I taught the woodwinds section for the new marching band my district has started. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a method book (my method book preference varies depending on the instrument). At the early stages, the fundamentals of music are essential. My philosophy of music is that any student is capable of achieving anything they want, as long as they put their mind to it and they work hard. I started playing the saxophone in second grade; however, there were basic fundamentals that I was still learning in college. Read More

Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. I typically tailor my lesson plans to the needs of the student. In general, I will allocate appropriate Etudes, Scales, and Repertoire that is inline with their abilities and the standards of their particular instrument. If they are preparing for an upcoming performance or audition, that may take precedent. But I also think there is equal need for unstructured time that allows students to explore music as a creativity medium via music listening, exploratory exercises, improvisation, or even composition.
