My style is very interactive in not teaching the students, but demonstrating what are the proper ways to approach different praticing techniques and repertoire selections. With my vocal lessons I have students do proper warm-up techniques and various scales before we begin working on vocal selections. Afterwards I use repetition with the repertoire in order to help the students with skills that are needed to perform any particular piece including intonation, diction, and breathing. Read More

In high school, I first started working with kids through Special Olympics, mission trips, and church. As an educator, I am soft-spoken, patient, and warm, creating an understanding environment. My expectations of my students, though high, are extremely clear. It is up to the educator to modify for every student. I believes that the importance of music in the schools allows students to connect with each art and more importantly, themselves, foster responsibility, and discover a potential lifelong joy in music making. For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. My teaching started in my undergrad, about 5 years ago when I was required to take a Vocal Pedagogy class as part of my major. From there I fell in love with teaching. I was able to expand on my love as a substitute teacher at Rabun Gap Academy in Rabun Gap Georgia in 2012. There I taught five girls ranging from 8-15. I continued that until 2014, I then took on two colleagues, a girl who was 24 at the time and a guy who was 19 and taught them for a year. Read More

Music is a powerful tool in expanding one's understanding of academics, emotions, and culture; among a variety of other things. I began studying music in a performing arts academy at the age of 10. While there, I studied saxophone, cello, double bass, and voice. I continued to major in music throughout high school. While there, I studied within the jazz ensemble, wind ensemble, concert band, marching and pep bands, and saxophone quintet. Read More

One of my favorite parts of teaching is supporting my students in the development of their authentic voices. Every student is unique and special in their own way, that's why I tailor each lesson for that specific student and I meet them exactly where they are. This allows the student to progress at their own pace. I encourage this development by setting realistic goals for each lesson, and acknowledging their accomplishments. Read More

Every lesson begins with vocal warm ups and breathing exercises, the importance of which can't be understated. Just as athletes wouldn't take the field without stretching, singers should never sing without giving their voice time to warm up. Warming up also serves as an excellent way for Jon to gauge student progress and make sure they are vocally healthy. After warm-ups, we move on to song study. Students and I work together to pick out the best songs for their particular voice. Read More
