Bachelor Degree: Colburn Conservatory of Music, Master Degree: Juilliard School
I am an experienced instructor and musician who loves working with students and performing. I graduated from the Juilliard School for my master’s degree. I’ve played in world-famous concert halls including Carnegie Hall and Boston Symphony Hall, and I’ve won numerous competitions, including the Flute Society of Washington Competition. As a passionate orchestra musician, I have been a member of the Juilliard Orchestras, the sub-list of the New World Symphony and North Shore Symphony Orchestra. I had the pleasure of playing with renowned conductors, including Valery Gergiev and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
I am a passionate and motivated instructor who’s been teaching for 10+ Years. My students have played at Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall, and they have won numerous awards, including Vivo International Music Competition, Prodigy International Music Competition NYICMC, ad Golden Classical Music Awards. I am available to teach all levels-from beginners to advanced. My students get perfect scores on NYSSMA and region/state tests in NY and NJ areas. Also, several of my students got into Manhattan School of Music Precollege, Mannes Precollege, and Camerata Youth Orchestra.
For absolute beginners, I start by explaining different parts of the flute. I first work on the headjoint to make sure the student can produce a good sound with good air without assembling all parts together. After a student gets a good sound, I let them assemble the flute and start teaching one note at a time. I usually start with Essential Elements for Flute Level 1. If a student is more advanced, I use Rubank Intermediate/Advanced Books, and start learning more pieces. If a student is really advanced, I use different technique books in addition.
I believe the most important thing about learning music is that they have to first enjoy playing the flute. I make students practice and expect them to go to certain levels, but I first make them fall in love with the flute first. For 1 hour flute lessons, I usually spend 10 minutes on tone(sound quality) and air usage, since these are the most important fundamentals of learning the flute. For next 20 minutes, I work on techniques including scales. For the last 30 minutes, I work on pieces/songs that students are working on.
