I am an enthusiastic and talented music instructor who loves working with students and sharing my passion for music.  I graduated from the University of Mary Washington in the Fall of 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music.  I have a wide variety of musical talents, including theory, performance and composition.  My primary instrument is flute and I am comfortable teaching any age group and any skill level. I am currently a student at Five Towns College in NY studying composition although I have 15+ years experience with flute and around 10 years with saxophone as well. My primary instrument is flute, and I can play soprano/alto/tenor/baritone sax, however, I primarily play tenor and baritone the most. For my beginning students who are children, I may start them with Hal Leonards Essential Elements and/or the Rubank Method. Once they begin to learn the basics and and can grasp the fundamentals, I can begin to introduce solo pieces. For adults, I try to learn about what level the student is and what their interests are so that I can cater my lessons accordingly. I have just graduated from college and there are colleagues of mine who have been in the teaching feild longer than I have. However, I have learned and solidified a good teaching technique and energy, making the process individual to the student. Two of my students have done very well in their NYSSMA exams in the past year. I have been teaching music since I attended high school and have continued to do so for the past 6 years. Improvisation and expression are key points I like to emphasize in all my students, as anyone can sit down and practice scales until their fingers fall off, but being able to express yourself through a musical instrument takes dedicated work and direction. My students are made to create as much as they are made to perform, as understanding how music works and the theory behind it is achievable regardless of level or age. Read More
