I use the following method books, depending on the age and ability of the student: Alfred, Bastian and John Thompson. For younger students (under eight years old) I usually use the Alfred all in one book.. for older children, I use the Bastian set of four books: piano performance, technic and theory. My teaching style is one of flexibility, but still with expectations. I cater specifically to the needs of the student, and choose repertoire and exercises that will fit with their needs. I encourage positive self-assessments and self talk, and strongly believe that progress is based on collaborative efforts of the student and teacher. As a musician and teacher, I primarily view music as one means of artistic self-expression. In my students journey of self-expression, I will help them to learn music history, music theory, and different musical cultures which can influence their perspective on the world around them, as well as how they see themselves. Through music I teach self-discipline, patience, and good practice methods while learning the flute.
