I like to figure out what their reason is and progress accordingly. For beginning students who are children, I start with Rubank's Elementary Method book.  This will provide the student with the basic fundementals.  I will then introduce the student to a variety of solo repertoire for his or her instrument. I try to make my lessons as fun as possible so the child grows up with music as a fun, artistic outlet.  For students who already have knowledge on their instrument or who are adults, I aim to find what the student is interested in, and adjust my instruction accordingly. I like to have my students progress to a point where they feel comfortable picking a song of their choice, transcribing it as accurately as possible, and playing it. For advanced students: there is no set structure for advanced students, as their requests and sets of strengths and weaknesses are so individually specific that I have to create a specific lesson plan for each student. However, one theme that I love to introduce advanced musicians to in terms of music theory are the psycho-acoustics and emotional manipulation of specific chord progressions, modes, cadences, and modal interchange. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I am originally from Austin, TX, but moved to Colorado in order to pursue a masters degree in performance and pedagogy at the University of Colorado Boulder.
