I have a four-fold method system for teaching the flute based on tone, scales, etudes, and solo and orchestral repertoire. From the start I see the importance at learning and accomplishing the goal of learning a solo piece. Whether that is an absolutely beginning learning simple tunes, to collegiate level exam pieces. I like to set goals for my students. I generally work out of lessons books, solo repertoire, and whatever else the student brings in. If the students have music from classes in school, I will also assist them with that. I try to keep the lesson light, and enjoyable! I have performed all across the state of Pennsylvania, in Connecticut, New York, Delaware, and as far away as Italy. For beginning students who don't come from a school program with a chosen book, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence or Rubank's Elementary Methods. Once students have gotten the basics down, I begin to introduce other types of books such as technique books, scale books, etudes, or even solo repertoire. I teach half hour lessons and instruct the student on good reading habits, how to practice and perform, encouraging them to bring in any supplemental music they are working on at school or on the internet. The importance of practice cannot be over emphasized, nor can the encouragement (nagging!!) Of an interested parent. A student cannot learn an instrument just by coming to lessons. But how we approach playing them is what makes us better. My teaching style is relaxed and organic. Don't get me wrong, we will work hard! But it will be fun and enriching. I teach my students to appreciate the music they make, and to listen to themselves for what is working well, in addition to what can be improved.
