For all of my students, I typically start with teaching (for more advanced students at least reviewing) the fundamentals of breathing for singing. From there I move on to phonation: how to produce a healthy sound, in coordination with and supported by the breath. My teaching experience rests in observations and with my peers. I have taught multiple classes and sectionals on my own in my now 4 year college career both in ensembles and in my host schools. I have taught a lesson on Music Theory, going over some core concepts that can be found there, I have taught 3rd grade students songs in a general music classroom, I have led a lesson there as well, making sure that each student stays focused on the task before them, and I have lead sectionals for Concert and Chamber Choir here at Lebanon Valley College. For beginning piano students, I usually employ the Faber or Alfred Series books. They are intuitive and the various books (Lesson, Theory, Technique, Performance, etc) complement each other well! They also have an "older beginner" series that is great for teens and adults that are new to piano. I also encourage my students to try composition, even if it is very simple melodies.
