Once I feel the student has a solid understanding of these fundamentals, I move onto introducing them to repertoire that I think would help in putting these newly learned fundamentals into use as well as allowing them to expand their knowledge on other important factors of singing such as diction, pronunciation, phrasing, keeping a legato line, and possibly language skills depending on the piece. For beginning vocal students, I start by simply teaching a student how to warm up; from there, we work together to determine what a student's natural strengths and weaknesses are and select repertoire that the student is personally interested in that is also appropriate to their level of proficiency. For a young 11 year old beginner, homework assignments will begin with the instrument itself, and then eventually Book One of any method book desired. Popular practice dictates good results with books like Yamaha and Standard of Excellence. For middle-level ability (middle school / early high school), the Rubank series is perfect. Some of my career highlights include the many recitals I have crafted and performed with musical colleagues, singing in a NY opera program called American Singers' Opera Project, my debut at Carnegie Hall in 2012 and all those wordelss moments of connecting with an audience during songs.
