I value working with my students on a personal level to determine what their goals are for lessons, and then make a plan to address those goals to the best of my ability. For beginner students, I always focus on building a solid understanding of music reading, rhythm, fingering of notes, and general musical concepts that may be glossed over in a classroom setting (which is where many students begin their musical education). The key ingredient to learning is interest. I believe that my students need to have an interest in what they are playing so that they can keep their minds and spirits engaged. Rudiments require attention and practice, but there is much more to learning an instrument than just technique; passion also needs nurturing.
