The key ingredient to learning is interest. I believe that my students need to have an interest in what they are playing so that they can keep their minds and spirits engaged. Rudiments require attention and practice, but there is much more to learning an instrument than just technique; passion also needs nurturing. I have worked with students at a variety of levels and will meet the their needs accordingly. I ask my students what their goals are and then build an individualized lesson plan based on their needs. We can work on music for performances or for personal growth. I want to help my students reach their musical goals. I usually teach students out of method books to begin with, and while we work through these I ask the students to help select pieces for fun that they might also want to learn for perfomance. I have been teaching private lessons for over ten years. While pursuing my bachelor’s degree at the University of North Texas, I taught private lessons for students ranging from 10 to 17 years old. I helped them prepare for local competitions, placement playing tests, and even for their college auditions. I also coached several of my colleagues at UNT for chamber music performances, solo competitions, audition tapes, and professional auditions. During my master’s degree at Stony Brook University, I coached my colleagues who are pursuing their DMA’s, and taught an adult student working toward returning to school for a degree in music. I use positive reinforcement and notice what the student is doing right. Then, I give critique and an action plan to improve performance.
