If the student is brand new to the flute, I would also do some breath work, and introduce exercises to improve tone and understand tuning. The most important thing is that each student feels enjoyment and inspiration from their lessons. While I think it is necessary to stay on topic and have boundaries, beyond that, my teaching style is often unique to the student. Some students move at a quick paces and move through repertoire quickly, while others need more time to process and work. I also try to allow my students a chance to play something they want at the end of lessons. As my students advance we add in classical pieces as well as jazz, and improvisation. During this residency I was able to give private woodwind lessons to beginners-intermediate players, conduct, and co-lead wind ensemble rehearsals. Since graduating San Jose State University in 2023, where I worked as a music theory tutor for all undergraduate theory classes, from beginning theory through advanced counterpoint and orchestration; I have also started teaching music theory, composition, and sound recording remotely to all levels in my own studio.
