Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. For beginning students I teach out of the Rubank Elementary Method books. These books are most comprehensive for beginning students. As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult students needs and wants. I generally start off my beginners with A.C. Peterson's Rubank Elementary Method or Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence. After they develop the basic skills, I will move the student onto Robert Cavally's Melodious and Progressive Studies etude book. From there, I may introduce solo repertoire into the curriculum.
