I encourage this by promoting practice methods which are likely to foster a deep experience of the music in the student, setting realistic but challenging goals in lessons which require the student to grow in order to succeed, and providing honest feedback with lots of encouragement. I first started teaching piano and flute/piccolo back when I was in high school. When I started, I mainly focused on helping my fellow students prepare for performances and competitions. When I was in college, I was offered a temporary teaching position to teach piano at Allegro Music Academy (Lemont, IL) and I was able to work with children of all ages and playing levels. For beginning students, I typically like to start with one of the Andersen etude books. This helps the student really get a grasp for the technicality and fundamentals of their instrument. This will also help them to progress in their musical playing abilities with their solo pieces. I like to start every lesson with scales or etudes and then work on their solo piece afterwards. I like to guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

For beginning musicians, I like to start with the very fundamentals of music theory in order to get them comfortable with reading music and understanding what they are doing. Books I have used in the past include the Essential Elements series and the Melodious and Progressive Etude series. I also understand the importance of enjoying what one is playing, so I always urge students find pieces or books for themselves that they are interested in, and incorporate them into my lessons.
