I have been teaching since age 15 (1999). In addition to extensive performing experience on clarinet, I have functioned as a piano accompanist, choir member, and praise band member through the years. For beginners, I use Rebecca Simonfalvi's called "Potential Contender." It is geared for young children starting out in band. For adults, I generally move between Trevor Wye's "Beginners book for the flute" or the Rubank Elementary Method. If needed, especially with the young, I generally have my students take notes of lessons. I also teach basic theory to give students a deeper understanding of the music. Ive always wanted to help others become more successful, especially since during my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I did not have a lesson teacher of my own, so I often had to work alone. I use the Mark Thomas flute books for beginner through the 2nd year. In the first year, I typically teach basic fundamentals of scales and playing the full range of the instrument along with basic flute literature. Once these are complete I transition into the Anderson studies and more advanced literature. I have taught flute for 4 years to people of all ages -I have taught children, high school students, pre-college division music majors, college students and adult amateurs - students who have played in school and community orchestras, churches and for their own personal enjoyment. I've been teaching privately for about 15 years, starting when I was a student at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Since that time, I've taught students on Saxophone, Flute, and Clarinet at all levels, from beginners all the way to advanced players in high school. My focus as an undergraduate was in jazz performance, and I love to teach about jazz techniques, beginning to advanced improvisation, and group dynamics.
