Since the age of 11, Anna Kate has held a tremendous passion for classical flute. It was her junior year of high school when she decided to pursue a career in music and started her journey by joining the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, which toured in France, performing at large concerts in various cities. For beginning piano students, I use the Faber Piano Adventure series. This series is simple, filled with music theory, and keeps the young student motivated. For beginning flute students, I use the Trevor Wye flute instruction books, along with the curriculum that is being taught in the student's band class at school. My teaching style is fairly easy going. I don't force unrealistic expectations on students because everyone is learning music for a different reason. I like to figure out what their reason is and progress accordingly. If it's a young student looking to continue music throughout their school career, I will make sure they learn how to read sufficiently and I will make sure they know how to play with peers by performing with the student as an accompanist. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More

These goals could be things like getting a superior rating at solo and ensemble, auditioning into an honor band, learning more about a genre of music, or just to have fun! I approach my teaching method with the perspective of a guided musical exploration. While I have certain methods and books that I rely on I tailor lessons individually to each students' style of learning and goals. I want lessons to be fun and engaging leaving the student inspired to practice and excited to attend the next lesson. Beginner/Intermediate Students: At this level the most important elements are developing proper flute technique (holding the flute, creating a good embouchure, breathing, how to stand/sit with the flute, basic articulation) and good practice habits.
