I have also studied piano, strings, voice for over 2 decades. I will guide them through what the book cannot explain and help them truly internalize aspects of playing their instrument. Putting a label on any student, and/or compartmentalizing students is the last thing I would ever do. There are a couple of good method books, but introducing appropriate solo repertoire as early as possible creates a sense of self accomplishment, and so I normally follow my teaching instincts to know exactly the best time to bring this into the picture.
