I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More

My teaching experience goes back to late high school - early college days. My love for the flute dates back to middle school when I was in band and the flute teacher said i should play clarinet or another woodwind instrument and I was adamant about playing flute. I got lessons and continued to work hard. Over the years my band directors and flute instructors noticed I was improving which helped my confidence. Read More

For flute beginning students, I usually start with the Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their skill level. For flute intermediate to advanced students, I try to find out what the student is interested in, what they have previously worked on, and what their goals are musically. I like to focus on fundamentals such as extended scales in various patterns, etudes geared towards development of a specific technical aspect, and solo repertoire containing these fundamentals. What is taught is dependant on what the student currently needs. Most beginners I work with are using the Essential Elements book that they use at school. For older students I will utilize what the student is working on in school as well as determining weak areas that need to be addressed, and the areas the student might want to focus on (classical technique, jazz theory and playing, etc.). Often I will write my own exercises for the students to work on areas I feel might need attention.  Read More
