The first lesson is always about providing a safe relaxed tone and finding out where that student's progress is. I typically start beginners with the Rubank method, as it contains a good balance of fundamentals, technical exercises, and fun, tuneful melodies. Particularly when working with children, I supplement this with my own devices, including flash cards and various learning games. I gradually incorporate solo material as appropriate. While I personally am primarily a classical musician, I make a point of including any style that is of special interest to the student in order to make music as enjoyable and relatable as possible. I have been playing saxophone since elementary school and even focused my college studies around it, graduating with honors from Florida AM University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Jazz Studies and Commercial Music. The Suzuki method is ideal for beginning flute students, particularly young students. For a young 11 year old beginner, homework assignments will begin with the instrument itself, and then eventually Book One of any method book desired.
