- As a foundation principle of the Functional Voice Method communication is essential. There should be a very open and honest dialog between teacher and student. You can, and I encourage my students to ask, propose and work together. - Because posture, movement and breathe have such a mutual influence; we usually need some work or excercise regarding the body (movements envolving legs, arms, walking, jumping and a large etcetera). - Having fun while training is extremely important to me. Firstly, I teach the student the anatomy of the guitar and how to tune it, along with how to hold a pick. After that, I start teaching students how to identify notes on the fretboard. When they have a good grasp on that, I start to teach the basic modes, such as the major, minor, pentatonic, blues, lydian, mixolydian, and dorian modes, and while they are learning these, I give them exercises that use these modes to increase the student's mechanical skill, such as going up and down the scales in patterns of three/four/etc. Read More

As I've stated before, I really like to focus on how to play the instrument effectively. Proper posture, finger placement, finger pressure and articulation are all part of playing the proper technique. It also helps to minimize fatigue during countless hours of practice. Also, one of the main things in to make sure that the student is practicing on a daily basis and to develop their own practice regimen. Developing a love for the instrument, bordering on healthy obsession, is the key to progressing as a guitar player. Read More

My preferred piano method is Piano Adventures and I recommend using the Lesson, Theory, and Sight Reading books at each level. For guitar and voice I typically do not follow any specific method unless the student has a preference. For more advance piano students I typically will begin using Suzuki or move them to Burgmller Etudes and Schumann's Opus 68 - Album for the Young. I perform an assessment of new students in the areas of sight reading, music theory, rhythm, performance, and ear training. Read More

I have taught many students of various musical styles for the past 20 years. From some that just want to play the guitar in their living room or treat it as a hobby, to students that want to pursue a career in music. Every student is unique , so i utilize various methods and different approaches to suit each individual's needs and capabilities. In my many years of teaching, what I have realized is that proper technique should be emphasized as early as possible so that the student will not carry bad traits both in practice and in performance. My first passion has always and will always be music. I have been involved in music performance all my life, from singing in church at the age of four to being in performing arts magnet programs at Hyattsville Middle School and Suitland High School. I formed a love for psychology later in life. Fortunately, I have found a field of study that will allow me to pursue both at once, music therapy. Read More

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I feel as though everyone has a creative block every now and then it’s something that every musician deals with. I can definitely say sometimes I go through slumps where I’m having a musical wall and meet a breakthrough but that just pushes me to further my plane and think of new concepts and ideas to take it to the next level. Mastery and creative blocks are one of the hardest things to conquer when playing in any instrument but it’s also something that I find can be mastered over time with hard work and diligence.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Several of my students have received fans from their own music because of my lessons and musical training which is helped improve their own bands and musical endeavors. I can’t say they’re winning Grammys but they are definitely making moves in the music world and improving their lives which is the greatest reward to me in my opinion. Every student should have a special goal that they are trying to achieve with my lesson should be doing to help them. I am proud of my students and what they have achieved through my lessons.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I’m definitely proud of all of the live shows and traveling I have achieved with playing guitar. Most of all I’m definitely proud of my endorsements and instruments I received from playing all these years. To be able to travel the world meet new places try new foods and experience new things in life are the greatest accomplishments to me. There’s nothing more for filling in life than that I can definitely say that it has made everyone in my family proud and above all myself which is most important.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I’ve always had a huge fascination with playing Atari ever since I was younger. The things you were able to create with plain is something that other instruments didn’t seem appealing to me. The sound and the playability of the instrument is what really stuck out to me playing guitar something that I always found inspiring to do and still feel that way to this day whenever I pick it up. Like they always say, everyone secretly wants to play guitar whether they admit it or not! Guitar will always be my passion.
