I've worked in my home studio, in students' homes, in a traditional classroom setting, in small classes, in large college lecture halls, and in online classrooms. I am a lover of sharing music with students and fellow musicians. I have been playing for more than 30 years and have been teaching flute either privately or as adjunct faculty for over 15 years. I studied flute at a performing arts high school and at Arkansas State under Joe Bonner. I graduated from James Madison University where I studied with Carol Kniebusch Noe, played four years in the JMU Flute Choir and in the JMU Wind Symphony. I find that the most important part of studying an instrument is that the student gains an appreciation of music. Therefore, I make it an important part of my lessons to work on at least one thing that student is particularly interested in. I find that praising students often even when they make small gains is good encouragement and serves to further encourage them to play well and enjoy what they play. Read More

My Student Teaching semester granted me the opportunity to work with elementary and secondary levels; starting beginners and working with students preparing for district band as well as college careers.  It was nice to work with this range in age and skill level, whether they were aiming for career goals or simply playing for fun! I now teach Elementary Vocal / General Music in Baltimore County Public Schools grades k-5. It is crucial that the teacher can make adjustments to teach according to the nature of their students, some students can learn really fast and may have a desire to be pushed harder, but many students are either normal or may require a longer time to digest the material. In addition to her studies at Vanderbilt, Blythe studied at the Institute of European Studies, in Vienna, Austria. There, she had the opportunity of working with Ulrike Anton, and with Barbara Gisler-Haase, at Universiteat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. While an undergraduate, Blythe performed with various chamber ensembles and toured China with the university's orchestra. During her graduate studies, Blythe traveled to Costa Rica to work with El Sinem, a prototype of El Sistema, the music education program that originated in Venezuela. Read More
