It is important that when attending private lessons that a student receives individualized instruction geared to their specific level of playing and their musical desires. Because of this, I like to utilize a systematic approach to lessons--each week students work on scales (Major, minor, chormatic), etudes/lesson books, solo repertoire, duet and a piece of choice. Once we've learned all the fundementals, I like to give students the ability to choose their repertiore (with guidance of course!), offering 3-5 examples of possible solo work--but we're always working on a "fun" piece of choice.I believe that engaging students in the selection process of repertoire helps create ownership, especially when practicing.I like to have students set tangible short and long-term goals so that we're always improving during lessons. I am a passionate educator and performer from the greater Boston area. I love to see my students succeed and achieve their musical goals. My students have gone on to the college level at University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and University of New Hampshire. At the undergraduate level, I played with the UNH Wind Symphony and the UNH Symphony Orchestra for three years. I have had two full solo recitals at UNH, and I have had the opportunity to be recorded on the Wind Symphony CD: The Music of Daniel Bukvitch. Upon graduating with two degrees I moved to New York City. Read More

Learning the flute is not easy, and for some learning to improvise can be just as challenging. My goal is to make the learning experience fun for the student, and to help them master their instrument and become a great improviser. Read More

I started working as a music teacher when I was really young, during my second year in college. After all these years I've learnt how important is to connect with students to understand what motivates them, what their goals are, and what they need to achieve them. That's why I love teaching one-on-one private lessons, because I can give the students all my attention and adapt the teaching process according to their needs. Read More

I began teaching oboe and piano lessons when I was in college at Ball State University, about 8 years ago, and have added the other instruments over the course of the last 5 years. I struggled with intense performance anxiety, and found that singing at open mics relieved some of the stress I felt when I played the oboe. I encourage singing everything through before even touching the instrument, and ask all of my students to get comfortable with singing in lessons, because it's going to happen! Read More

For small children, I used kid-friendly method books provided by the music school I was working with at the time to keep them engaged and entertained. For older children and adults, I simply ask about their prior musical knowledge and the music that they enjoy so we could use that as inspiration. For beginning students, I recommend the Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements which are both great options for the basics of their instruments and both include fingering charts and fingerings for each new note they learn. I want students to learn what they're most interested in, with the caveat that I can teacg them a "song" or I can teach them the instrument and they can play any song. Whenever I can I play duets with the students. It makes what they're doing sound more like music. And I make mistakes. That shows that mistakes are no big deal (1 wrong note is a mistake. Make the same mistake repeatedly, you're doing it wrong). Read More
