Each student is a unique individual. No two students are the same, nor will any lesson be. I use positive encouragement and reinforcement when communicating to my students. This means identifying what they might be doing correctly, as well as what needs improvement in a supportive way. My goal is to build confidence and self-esteem in their music and life. I look forward to being a part of their musical journey and hope to make it as rewarding as possible. Read More

I am an experienced teacher of flute, having taught countless students in a wide age range, and from beginners to college to semi-professional. I enjoy starting students who are just beginning, and I have become known as the go-to teacher for adults of all levels. I love teaching, love music, and the combination is dynamite. I have an uncanny ability to home in on the students' difficulties and perceptions, and am very gratified to be able to help them play to the best of their ability. Read More

For novice students, I will most likely start with a method book such as one from the Essential Element's series. However, I will typically move students through the method book quickly and get right into performance repertoire that is appropriate for their age and level. Composing your own pieces and learning to improvise are extremely important in my method of teaching so I will also start teaching students how to write their own music as soon as possible. I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. My Masters degree in music education has enabled me to develop as a well rounded instrumental music teacher, and also as a flexible individual when it comes to understanding my students' musical needs. My teaching experience began in my early years of college, as I began teaching private lessons part time two years ago, and have been consistently teaching students online and in person since then. I view music lessons as a vital part of a student's all-around education. Music is to be learned just like a language, we have to understand what we are doing in order to actually do it! My lessons are based around teaching fundamentals (technique, posture, embouchure), musicality, and good practice habits that students can use when they move on in their musical endeavors. Read More

Effectiveness is key when practicing so I have always encouraged multiple practice sessions a day but smaller amounts of time (15-20 minutes) so that you can really improve and see changes in your playing and musicality. This also helps keep the student from becoming frustrated and developing a negative relationship with the piece, practicing, or music in general. I would like to assist and encourage my students to enter contests, recitals, and NYSSMA as well as compose their own material so they can stay motivated and feel accomplished while challenging themselves. Always start with the basics to build upon a strong foundation. For beginners, I typically recommend the Rubank series (now part of the Hal Leonard Corporation), likely the Rubank Elementary Method, or E. Wagner Foundation to Flute Playing, depending upon what level they've already achieved. I teach both to the book and to the student's needs preferences; thus, we may progress on a page-by-page basis, covering approximately 1 book page per week with a weekly 45-minute lesson to review and then progress, or focus on areas the student needs to strengthen, such as practicing long-tones to improve tone strength and quality and using the book lessens only as a supplement. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
