I am currently obtaining my Masters of Music degree in Flute Performance from New York University. I began this degree in September 2018 and I anticipate to finish in December of 2019. I use what some have called the target approach. With this method you are working on one concept at a time, and you should always have one concept in mind while you practice. Some examples of beginning concepts are 1) keeping a steady beat, 2) sound quality, or 3) smooth finger technique. In one practice session using the target approach you may spend 10 minutes on target 1) and 15 minutes on target 2). For beginning students I typically start with Hannon and my own finger exercises. I ask the the student to draw notes on a staff so they can get familiar with reading and composing music. All students from beginner to advanced, are given warm up exercises and recommended pieces to play . After 30 years of teaching piano, organ and flute ,I have written my own lesson books series. I am a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where I completed my degrees in Music Education and Saxophone Performance. During my time at Berklee, I studied notable professors such as Bill Pierce, Shannon LeClaire, Dino Govoni and Jeff Harrington. Additionally, I also completed his Masters degree in Saxophone Performance at Queens College under the direction of Antonio Hart. For beginners students, I start with Trevor Wye's Beginners Book for Flute, as well as Rubank's selected duets (Volume 1), and Marcel Moyse The Debutante Flutist. Once we have covered the basic foundations of the flute and have formed a core sound, I then introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for the students.
