I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I started my teaching with a group of peers and professors while studying my undergraduate Music Education degree. We worked as a group to teach children ages six through 16 how to play violin/cello and perform as group. We then held a large concert as well as performed with the Sacramento Philharmonic at a Link Up concert. Read More

Hello! My name is Amanda, and I am 28! I am a multi instrumentalist: I play drums, percussion, guitar, and piano. But, for teaching my love is for drum set and percussion! I have played for over 17 years now and taught for 3! I play in multiple gigging bands ranging from blues to rock and R&B. I went to school for music/ percussion and I love sharing my knowledge. It makes it so when I teach I am able to both show the technical side with rudiments and also the more fun side of playing along with your favorite songs! Read More

Each and every student who takes lessons from me is an individual. My focus in the beginning is on technique for sticks/hands/mallets. I also focus on body mechanics to help students be comfortable when playing the percussion instrument. When it comes to learning grooves and soloing concepts, I introduce students to a variety of styles. If a student shows interest in one, that particular style will be developed. Read More

I am a dedicated musician and teacher beginning my fifth year in Portland. My background is multi-disciplinary: on top of my musical coursework I hold degrees in poetry and language. I am a songwriter as well as an instrumentalist and composer. I believe creativity and originality are very valuable parts of musical expression that sometimes get overlooked! I have more than three years experience playing in local bands, and I am well-versed in the Portland music scene (though I continue to add to my knowledge!) Read More

From there, I get them to start incorporating some fills. I try to find out what kinds of music the student likes, and continue teaching them a few more grooves and fills and some other simple songs going off of that. I also start explaining subdivisions some more at this point. From there, I typically start to get into some rudiments and basic exercises. Often, I find I end up introducing some simple ones much earlier to help students over a hump in learning a groove or a fill. Read More

My philosophy for quality music education has three main parts: appreciation, practice, literacy. I braid all three of these parts into each lesson, with a student focused approach. I strongly believe that anyone at any age and abilities can learn enjoy making music. Fundamentals are important at all skill levels, as well as a mix of solo rep and working on full pieces I have the skills to be able to create any music my students want to do! Read More
