Basic snare drum rudiments like Flams and Paradiddles and basic rock beat drum patterns are a fun and engaging way to start learning. I use books as well as transcribe music myself to provide my students with a visual representation. Although I have my own methods and "prescribed" teaching materials, I love to keep a dialogue with the student. I always ask what their goals with music are, as I will then tailor the lessons accordingly. If a student says to me that they want to work towards an audition, I know that I can push them harder in terms of expectation and material. For me, the biggest thrill as a teacher comes from watching the enthusiasm on the face of my student who is having fun during their lesson. Creating a positive environment, where the student can learn at a pace that will suit their needs, experience, and goals is one of my highest priorities.
