I approach teaching in the perspective of a student. What I would like to learn. How much fun will it be to learn that specific technique. How long will it take me to learn that technique. And after I've learned it what can I do with that technique to impress my friends and family. As an instructor I enjoy helping to facilitate the spark of wonder. For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy. With students learning or continuing education on the piano, like to start with the basics. Once the student begins to have a grasp for that i begin to introduce reading music and theory. I also like to prepare the student to play any genre of music by sheet music or by ear as well.
