I typically teach with method books as references for younger students, occasionally using printouts to give to students to take home and study in order to have a better undertanding of what was gone over in class. As students become more proficient in music reading and theory understanding, we develop an understanding of what the student would prefer to learn in regards to genre and focus on that, and the technical aspects of playing that lead to proficiency in that genre and style. It is of paramount importance to me that I impart my experiential and theoretical knowledge of all things music unto the student in a personally tailored fashion which emphasizes the knowledge necessary for each individual student to identify and achieve their musical goals. I have the ability to identify the students interests and base my curriculum around their needs and desires as a musical being. I believe that knowledge not applied or bestowed unto another is wasted and that the most important thing about bettering yourself in any regard is to be able to pass that knowledge on to others so that they may add to the whole of the collective of, in this case, musical expression. For me nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student smile while they are playing their instrument. Therefore it is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I do this by setting goals for the current lesson as well as goals for their next lesson. I believe that acknowledging the students accomplishments only makes the students want to progress further on their instrument. My number one rule when doing anything is have fun and I teach with the mind set that my students will have fun playing their instruments. Read More

Seeing a student take on a challenging piece is more rewarding to me than anything. When I see a student struggling, I will offer the techniques that I would typically use, however there is no ONE right way to do everything. I encourage independent learning and going beyond the lesson. IF A STUDENT ONLY IS PRACTICING WHILE IN THE LESSON, WE CANNOT ADVANCE AS QUICKLY AS I PLAN. This will result in repeating lessons, which I avoid at all costs. Read More

Music in the school system is taught backwards. If you're a beginner, you were put in a beginning class. this makes it very difficult for students to advance quickly because they aren't playing music with people who are more advanced than them. I make sure the students have the ability to play the instrument before they learn a ton of theory, because knowing how the wrritten form of music work without being able to play them is recipe for frustration. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage my students by setting realistic goals and proving homework after each lesson to perfect for the next lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the students, I can successfully tailor my instruction to his or her learning style. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
