Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. Naturally everyone is different and will progress at their own pace, so I would guide my instruction according to their wants, needs, skill level and also challenge them to venture beyond their comfort zone in each lesson. Being familiar with music is key and this can be accomplished at any age. The more a student becomes familiar with music, the more connections and comparisons the student will be able to make between drummers in all kinds of settings and genres of music, which will then enhance the student's playing on the drum set. There are many different ways to teach. Som of my methods are as follows. 1- Freestyle. Feeling a certain rythm and figuring out how and what to play as far as that genre goes. 2- Feel. Understanding the undertone of music and how it should be felt by a listener or an audience. 3- Placement. This is the art of putting different little embelishments, in music, and in songs. I began teaching over the summer of 2010. While attending Berklee, I had countless one-on-one and small group sessions with fellow drummers where we would bounce ideas off one another and give each other "mini lessons," breaking down specific grooves and licks. In October, 2014, I led an hour-long master class for other Berklee percussion students about advanced polyrhythmic concepts and applications.
