For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. I start my beginning students off with learning to read music notation simply from a rudiment sheet and moving into a cd play a long book with basic drum rhythms and song structure. For intermediate to advance students, I typically start with Stick Control for the snare drummer by George Stone. For basic drum set we start with "The Rhythm Book" covering all drum set styles. If the student is interested in a specific genre and style of playing, we tend to travel down that road of goals they have set for themselves. Read More

Both students I've taught have had entirely different goals, one just trying to learn drumset and the other wanting to learn a song for his talent show. I like to see where the student is at level wise and take it from there. Example : if the student has never played before, we will start with how to hold the sticks. If there at level three but haven't touched 16th note triplets and go from there. If there trying to play Rush 2112 but are having trouble with certain parts - we will dissect it and concentrate on problem areas. Read More
