For beginner level students I start out with learning how to strike the drum as well as simple coordination exercises and intro level drum beats. After the student can grasp basic exercises, I introduce learning how to read music which will lead to reading out of various drum set instructional as well as technique books. I learned a lot from the dozens of teachers I took private lesons with growing up. In 2010 I was a counselor for a music camp in Upstate New York. I worked with young kids and helped teach them pop/classic songs. I've had a Diaspora class in college on teaching drumset to beginngers. Everyone who picks up an instrument is not going to tour the world as a musician. While this is true, every student can play and be proud. It is my job to help students progress and reach that level. I like to keep lessons light in attitude, but still put responsibility on my students. Work outside of lessons is a must for progress, even if only ten minutes is all that is possible. One of my goals is to show students how to reflect on whatever work they are doing and tell for themselves whether it is good work or not. I've been teaching all kids and adults for over 15 years. I 'm awesome with kids (so the parents have told me!)... I don't adhere to any rigid format. I work with what level and progression suits you, and I'm super-easy to get along with. Also, I believe in positive reinforcement. There are some old school teachers who sometimes degrade a pupil when they're not doing an exercise correctly. My love for teaching began as a peer tutor in college. I tutored students in piano, guitar, bass ear training, and music theory. I began to love teaching when I noticed the change and progress it creates within people. While in college, I taught at a musical theatre camp as a music teacher. I taught music theory, ear training, and vocal music. Right after I graduated college I was accepted into the music education program at Teachers College Columbia University where I received my masters degree in music education along with certification in New York state to teach Pre-K through 12.
