My methods vary. For piano, we start with simple technique exercises to make sure a student is making every note count. For younger students- like 6 and under- we'll nickname everything to make it easier. An example- the fingers should always be curled when playing piano, not flat. There should be enough space under their palm to hold hold a golf ball, so when they are playing with flat hands, I'll say 'golf ball' to remind them of the correct way, instead of being 'that mean old lady' type. For beginning students, especially those that are children, I typically will focus on teaching basic technique and fundamentals through the use of in-depth demonstrations, written out exercises, and exercises found in a variety of beginner's method books. Once the student has progressed to the point of having a good grasp of the basics, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire, song play-alongs, and/or a variety of more in-depth exercises based on the student's abilities. This personal agenda consists of different basic training, exercises, and repertoire that are designed to make them a better overall musician all the while becoming more skilled at the type of genre they wish to learn. I have been lucky enough to have been teaching for 45 years I have taught privately for a short period of time I also taught at Plainview high school as a drill instructor working with the students in the marching band and helping some of them prepare for nysma solos I really had a great time doing that for about a year and a half I taught at Sam Ash for group lessons for promotion the main thing that I like to do is get students to be proficient enough to be able to play two songs to be able to play in a band also too to be able to prepare for playing the band in whatever school they happen to be in college preparation audition preparation auditioning for America's got talent anything the student wants to do but the main thing that I really like to emphasize is having them be able to play to songs I like to teach all styles of music really working around with a student wants to do it's been really rewarding for me and it's always a great experience many of my students have gone on to play professionally and have achieved great technical skills it's great to see that happening.
