I first began teaching at the age of sixteen. I was hired to work at Berkshire Summer Music, a music camp for talented young children. I worked as a violin and viola instructor, teaching children of all ages, assisting with their technique and helped develop good practicing habits. Goals are always tailored to individual student interests. I like to assign practice homework, which is a mix of technical exercises and song-based learning using student-preferred music. I love to watch students peel back the layers of the onion and discover how their favorite artists make music, from learning common chord progressions to transcribing solos note-for-note to imitating playing styles. To complement my studies on drums, I studied jazz theory with reknown bassist and educator Scott Mason and jazz arranging with former Buddy Rich trombonist, Tom Garling. After graduating in May 2011, I have had the oppoutunity to play in major Chicago venues like The Metro, Lincoln Hall, Congress Theater, Reggies, Rosa's and many others. I always start beginning students with proper technique. I believe that great technique is the foundation of a great musician. I use a few different method books including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer, Modern Rudimental Swing Solos, Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials among others. I also believe that all musicians, especially drummers should have a strong rhythmic foundation so I incorporate sight-reading, call and response, and ear training to build the young musicians' instincts.
