I have several years of experience in both concert and marching percussion, playing in the LMEA All State Band in high school and marching at the Louisiana Stars Drum and Bugle Corps in 2019 and 2022. Therefore, I make it a point to set an agenda in each lesson that starts and ends with something fun, and is also predictable so that students know intuitively how to go about their practicing. During each lesson, the student and I set realistic goals for practicing and, despite the popular saying that the more time you spend practicing, the more effective your practice is, I have learned from many students that each student practices and learns from practicing in their own way.
