I began teaching private lessons in 2018 for double bass, electric bass, jazz theory, repertoire and improvisation. After graduating from Berklee I began teaching bass for the Hopkinton Music Association, a non-profit supporting music education in Hopkinton Public Schools. In 2023 I was hired as a music teacher for Note-worthy Experiences Music Studio and Karen Amlaw Music, where I taught bass, oboe, and English horn. I usually make a little recording of the new student on day 1 and then make them listen to it after a few lessons: It always surprises them to see how far they've gone! Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. For me, witnessing the "ah-hah" moment in a student's face is priceless. It means that a certain concept or idea has been understood by the student. I use the first lesson to find out what the student is inspired by and what aspect of their playing they wish to improve on depending on their age and skill level. Once I find out what inspires them, I'll be better informed as how to keep them inspired and moving towards certain goals. Read More
