My experience takes me straight out of high school. I have been a drum tech at West Johnston High School since Fall of 2015. Since then I've risen in the ranks and have taken a much bigger role. In between all of that, I've all taught at Wake Christian Academy as Percussion director for about a year. I've given a couple of students from that school private lessons and I've encouraged all of them to become better and more educated in the marching arts! Read More

I bring a wealth of hands on experience in many settings as well as a background in music education at an academic level to my lessons and interactions with students. After initially discussing the student's musical background and ambitions, I am able to assess what is the best path for them moving forward. For beginner students that usually means providing a beginner method book to introduce the fundamentals of music (the Hal Leonard Guitar Method is my go-to for aspiring guitarists). Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method as well as learning their favorite songs. For adults, I find out what the students are interested in, and guide my instruction accordinly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter they are beginners, songwriters, blues, jazz, classical, pop, funk, rock, fusion lovers or advanced players. I have been playing the drum kit for 20 years, and have taught drum kit and snare drum for 10. Throughout high school I played in every ensemble that had a percussion section or drum kit. After graduation I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston.I have been performing live since I was in middle school in many ensemble settings ranging from jam band to metal. My principle style is jazz (bop/post-bop). Read More

My teaching experience dates back to 1990, when, while homeschooling my children, I taught drums and guitar as part of their curriculum. Since then I have given lessons on a part time basis. Through my experience, I have become skillful in identifying a student's strengths, weaknesses and learning style. My focus is on challenging students at their current skill level while encouraging them and making the process of learning fun. I work with students to identify their personal goals and work with them to identify practical steps towards reaching those goals. Read More

I am a strict teacher and I try to keep a rhythm with all my students, however, I understand that not everybody has the same skills, time or motivation. Reason why I try to go to their own pace but demanding the best of them at the same time. Furthermore, I provide new lessons or exercises regardless they have practiced or no to encourage them to study at least one hour everyday. Read More

For beginning drum students, I typically like to start with the Percussive Arts Society sheet of rudiments to ensure a solid technical background as the student progresses. After that, we move on to simple reading and other drumming fundamental concepts including limb coordination, fills, phrasing and articulation, etc. With older students, I find it helpful to try and begin with what they are interested and comfortable in playing. This allows me to find connections and build lesson plans specifically for the individual. Read More
