PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE My teaching experience started in 2007 with teaching young kids from our youth meeting in church. Now I am teaching in my home studio in Belleville, NJ since 2016. With more than 10 years experience, I love working with new students of all ages. I use a curriculum developed by Mrs, Irina Gorin which specialize in kids from 4-6 years. For beginning students, especially those that are children, I typically will focus on teaching basic technique and fundamentals through the use of in-depth demonstrations, written out exercises, and exercises found in a variety of beginner's method books. Once the student has progressed to the point of having a good grasp of the basics, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire, song play-alongs, and/or a variety of more in-depth exercises based on the student's abilities. My methods vary. For piano, we start with simple technique exercises to make sure a student is making every note count. For younger students- like 6 and under- we'll nickname everything to make it easier. An example- the fingers should always be curled when playing piano, not flat. There should be enough space under their palm to hold hold a golf ball, so when they are playing with flat hands, I'll say 'golf ball' to remind them of the correct way, instead of being 'that mean old lady' type. I am also well versed in music theory and music history, including rock and pop history and I believe that exploring these things along with the lessons can be so helpful! I have coached students for auditions into the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College division among other prestigious honors. I find that seeing the joy my students take in performing their hard work has come to define my approach. I learned a lot from the dozens of teachers I took private lesons with growing up. In 2010 I was a counselor for a music camp in Upstate New York. I worked with young kids and helped teach them pop/classic songs. I've had a Diaspora class in college on teaching drumset to beginngers. The pace of lessons is up to the student. I will guide each student towards their goal. There is nothing I love more than the moment a student has a musical epiphany. That "I get it!" moment. Music is hard. Learning an instrument takes time and practice. It's important to remember why we do it. That's why it's important to be passionate and to remember that music is a lifelong process where we are always learning. Read More
