My teaching experience began with arranging and instructing drum line parts for a youth drum corps. After having children of my own, I realized I had a knack for working with children. I began teaching piano and percussion part-time 8 years ago as a way to share my passion for music. Nurturing an appreciation for composing and performing music, regardless of style or genre, is what my goal is with every student. Read More

I have been teaching privately since 2010, when I accepted a position as a teaching assistant at Bowling Green State University. My responsibilities included teaching private lessons to undergraduate percussion majors and coaching percussion ensembles. I also began teaching students from middle school through high school age around the same time, and my students have since included those of adult age. I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels of experience, as they all bring something unique to their lessons and allow me to bring out aspects of my personality that will engage them best. I started teaching drums in San Francisco in 1995. I teach all levels from beginner to professional in all styles including double bass drums. My specialty is jazz which includes boogie woogie, swing, big band, bebop, cool jazz, avant garde, fusion, afro-cuban, and salsa. I can teach basically any style you are interested in if you show me exactly the song or genre you are working on. We can perfect your fundamentals or take you to the next level of improvisation. My teaching style is straightforward and practical, always emphasizing the goals of each student specifically. The benefits of reading and understanding sheet music as it relates to your instrument far outweigh those of simple tablature used for guitar and banjo etc. However, in some cases it is practical to use non-traditional forms of instruction. A good teacher's goal is to help the student advance, even if it doesn't happen in a pre-conceptualized fashion. Read More

I started playing upright bass when I was 10 years old and quickly found that there was nothing that I enjoyed more than music. Throughout high school and college I played in orchestras, bands, jazz bands, rock bands and with singer songwriter friends. It was in college where I began teaching as part of a music for non-music majors elective and found that I really enjoyed showing people how to play an instrument. Read More

Each student learns differently and I accommodate and tailor my lessons accordingly. Percussion beginners will build their foundation on the standard snare drum rudiments and Moeller technique. So will the professionals. Beginner guitar students will focus on tuning the instrument, basic chords, scales and playing techniques. Read More
