My methods are in service of the cultivation of interest. Mainly I want the student to focus on learning how to play the music they want to play. The key to cultivating interest is to nurture the social, communicative and fun elements of playing music; associating the laughter and exhilaration with learning. I'm a self taught musician - I know that music is intuitive enough to learn without getting overly text-book about it, and I think focusing too much on the book at an early age can turn away potential musicians. I love to see all my students develop a passion for drumming and music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson and by teaching them the songs they love the most. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. While at Eustace, I won the Bishop Eustace Leadership in Music Award & the John Philip Sousa Award, the latter being a national award to honor the top student in high school band as it recognizes musicianship and outstanding dedication by one of the senior year members of the band. I first played the drums in middle school where I never read music, only played back what was told. By the time I got to High School, I knew it was necessary to be able to understand theory and by practicing throughout my years in High School, I was able to sustain a successful audition with the school's jazz band.
